Disney California Adventure has been perhaps the most troubled theme park ever built by the Disney Company. When the park first opened in 2001 it was immediately the subject of controversy among die-hard Disney fans who felt that the park was built on the cheap and quite tacky. Thankfully in 2007, Disney announced a major expansion as well as a major overhaul of a significant portion of the park. Construction lasted for five years and was completed in stages, culminating with the opening of Buena Vista Street and Cars Land in June 2012. The evolution of Disney California Adventure is fascinating and is a real testament to how talented Disney Imagineers truly are. The Disneyland Resort is home to Walt’s original Disneyland park; it is also home to Disney’s newest park on U.S. soil: Disney California Adventure. Although Disneyland has been used as a model for sister parks across the world, there is much to be learned from Disney California Adventure as well. The Park, inspired by the state of California itself, brings together vastly different “worlds” and seamlessly ties them together in one wonderful adventure. On the East Coast, Epcot seemingly does the same thing—tying together various countries around the world, celebrating their cultural differences, while still bringing them together through their humanity. However, this newer park in California could teach a thing or two to what has evolved out of Walt’s idea for Progress City. In the summer of 1995, Michael Eisner gathered company executives in Aspen, Colorado to think of an idea for a second theme park in California. From those meetings, Disney decided it would build a park themed to the history and culture of the state of California. Construction of the park began in 1998; the park's construction was accompanied by Downtown Disney and Disney's Grand Californian Hotel, and renovations of the Disneyland Hotel and Disneyland Pacific Hotel. Over the weekend, the former Taste Pilot’s Grill opened as Smokejumpers Grill. It is the first location to reopen in the now renamed area, Grizzly Peak Airfield (formerly known as Condor Flats). January at Disneyland Parks means the beginning of many walls going up due to refurbishment. There is never a good time but this time of year remains the slowest in terms of Guest traffic. The closures are scheduled in advance and the information is readily available should anyone need it when making plans to visit Disneyland Parks. Attractions and venues targeted for refurbishment usually need some maintenance that may include a fresh coat of paint, repairs and/or a deep cleaning. Sometimes, the refurbishment schedule may include major projects that involve removing or adding new show elements.
